Cyprian Majernik

A memorial to the Slovak painter Cyprián Majerník (1909-1945), who spent most of his working life in Bohemia.

His paintings were strongly influenced by contemporary events, especially the Spanish Civil War (Don Quixote became an important figure of hope for him) and the rise of National Socialism.

One of the most significant European artists of the war years, the horrors he saw around him were to drive him to depression and finally suicide. A large exhibition of his work in 1946 established an international reputation that has since grown considerably.
