Na poříčí 1072/15: Hotel Imperial

Hotel Imperial, Prague

The Hotel Imperial was built on the site of the former Black Eagle in 1913-14 by Jaroslav Benedikt. The interior of its late art-nouveau café is covered in hand-made majolica tiles from the Rakovník ceramic works designed by the artist Jan Beneš. Accompanying ornamentation by Josef Drahoňovský completes the effect of an oriental fantasy.

The café is particularly famous for its tradition (now alas, no more) of the legitimized bunfights which took place there in homage to an episode in Zdeněk Jirotka’s 1942 comic novel Saturnín.
